Part of Round Leaderboards

Matchplay

Matchplay turns one of your round's leaderboards into head-to-head matches: you against someone in your fourball, hole by hole, rather than everyone against the field. Win a hole and you go one up; the match is yours once your opponent can't catch you. With handicaps applied, the highest handicap in the group can beat the lowest.

Watch the walkthrough

Kevin switches on Matchplay and pairs his fourball. Sixteen holes later he checks his match: dormie, two up with two to play. At the end of the round he opens it again to see how he won, hole by hole.

How to set up your matches

Step 1Create a leaderboard with Matchplay switched on

On the round's Leaderboard screen, tap + Create. Switch on Matchplay, pick a format, then tap Create.

Step 2Add your fourball and pair the matches

You land on Manage leaderboard. Add the players in your fourball, then under Create a match, tap a player and then their opponent.

Step 3Follow the matches as you play

Your leaderboard gets its own tab, with a row for each match. The middle of the row says who's ahead, in the leader's colour, and changes as scores go in.

Step 4Read a match hole by hole

The match scorecard shows how the match swung, then every hole, with the score that won each one circled.

Things to know

  • Each hole goes to whoever scores better on it in your chosen format, after handicap strokes on a net format. A tie halves the hole.
  • A match ends as soon as one side is more holes up than there are holes left.
  • Matches count from the hole your fourball starts on, so they work with a shotgun start.
  • A team format starts with exactly two teams. You add players to them and pair the two teams.
  • Only the person who created the leaderboard can set up its matches.
  • Each player can create up to 3 extra leaderboards per round, matchplay or not.

Why we built this

Plenty of fourballs already have a match going inside the round: two friends with a long-running rivalry, or one pair against the other. It used to be settled on the back of a scorecard afterwards. Matchplay keeps it in the app, applies the handicaps hole by hole, and shows where every match stands while you're still out there.
